The quiet comeback of the arcade racer

October 7, 2026 · Lukas Berger

Serious racing sims want wheels and pedals. Arcade racers just want your thumbs, and that makes them a perfect fit for the phone. Neon Draft Rally reminded me how good the pure-arcade formula still feels when someone gets the handling right.

The trick is forgiveness. A great arcade racer lets you drift wildly, clip a wall, and still feel in control. When I crash in a game like this, I never blame the controls — I blame myself, and that keeps me coming back for the next run.

Short tracks matter too. The best arcade racers are built for replays: a lap or two, a quick leaderboard glance, and you're straight back in. That loop is almost ideal for a few spare minutes.

If you've bounced off mobile racing because it felt too fiddly, try switching to touch steering and picking an arcade title rather than a sim. The difference in feel is night and day.
