How to actually read a strategy map before you panic

How to actually read a strategy map before you panic

May 3, 2026 · Lukas Berger

I used to lose strategy games by moving too fast. I'd see an enemy, charge at it, and only later realise I'd stretched myself too thin. Games like Tideborne Command cured me of that, mostly by punishing it relentlessly.

The first habit worth building is checking your supply before your ambition. Where can you resupply? How far can you push and still get home? Answer that first and half your bad decisions disappear.

The second is to plan in turns, not moves. Instead of asking what to do right now, ask where you want to be three turns from now and work backward. It sounds obvious but it completely changes how you play.

And finally: learn to retreat without feeling bad about it. Pulling back to consolidate isn't losing, it's setting up the next advance. The games that frustrate beginners are usually the ones that reward exactly this kind of patience.
