The exact moment a management sim finally clicks

July 11, 2026 · Lukas Berger

Management sims nearly always start slow. The opening hour is all manual drudgery — one shop, one worker, every task done by hand. A lot of people quit here and never see the good part, which is a shame.

Gearsmith Tycoon is a perfect example. For the first stretch you're clicking through repairs yourself, and it's fine but unremarkable. Then automation unlocks, and suddenly you're an architect instead of a labourer, shaping a system rather than doing its chores.

That shift is the whole appeal of the genre. The joy isn't in the grind, it's in watching the machine you built run smoothly without you. The early grind only exists to make that freedom feel earned.

So my advice with any tycoon game: give it until the first real automation unlock before you judge it. If it still bores you after that, fair enough — but most of them are hiding their best hour behind their worst.
